The Chicago Bar Association says:
William H. Laws is “Qualified” for the office of Circuit Court Judge. Mr. Laws was admitted to practice law in Illinois in 1980 and is engaged in solo practice concentrating in criminal law. Mr. Laws has extensive trial experience in both the state and federal court and is well regarded for his legal knowledge, legal ability, fine demeanor, and calm temperament.
The Chicago Council of Lawyers says:
William Hanson Laws was admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1980. Since that time, he has been a Solo Practitioner at William H. Laws, Ltd., where he focuses on criminal defense. He has represented clients in State and Federal courts, in cases ranging from misdemeanors to first degree murder and drug conspiracy cases. He is a member of the Cook County Bar Association and has provided pro bono services through its volunteer legal clinic.

Mr. Laws is considered to have good legal ability and has substantial litigation experience in criminal law and civil rights matters. He is reported to have a good temperament and most respondents praise his litigation skills. Mr. Laws had one serious issue with a federal jury case that involved a conspiracy with nine co-defendants. The Federal Defender who ultimately represented Mr. Laws’ client claimed on a Habeas petition that the client had received ineffective defense counsel at trial. The judge concluded that Mr. Laws’ representation was lacking. The Council must balance this case against a long career of being considered a solid practitioner. The Council finds Mr. Laws Qualified for the Circuit Court.
The Illinois State Bar Association says:
Williams Laws was admitted in 1980. He is currently a sole practitioner focusing on criminal defense and civil rights matters, and has jury and bench trial experience. He has also handled some appeals and a few federal cases. While many attorneys gave favorable comments about his legal knowledge, ability, diligence and professionalism, there were some who disagreed. In one case cited, US v. Murphy-Jackson, it appears that he was found to be ineffective, particularly regarding sentencing issues. He has been involved in some bar association activities with the Cook County Bar Association and also some community activities. Mr. William H. Laws is found to be Qualified for election to the Circuit Court of Cook County.
