Jill Rose Quinn wins, county Democratic Party slate bats .667

Jill Rose Quinn, the first transgender candidate ever slated by the Cook County Democratic Party, won the race for the K. Sheehan vacancy handily.

It was, on balance, a pretty good night for the party slate.

Let's look at the results.
Bellows vacancy - Party loss - Tiesha L. Smith beat slated Judge Kerrie Maloney Laytin
Coghlan vacancy - Party loss - Kelly Marie McCarthy beat slated Judge James T. Derico, Jr.
Ford vacancy - Party win for Laura Ayala-Gonzalez
Funderburk vacancy - Party win for Judge Celestia L. Mays
Larsen vacancy - Party win for Judge Levander "Van" Smith, Jr.
Mason vacancy - Party win for Chris Stacy
McCarthy vacancy - Party win for Judge Teresa Molina
Murphy Gorman vacancy - Party win for Judge Sheree Desiree Henry
O'Brien vacancy - Party loss - Elizabeth Anne Walsh beat slated Judge Lloyd James Brooks
Roti vacancy - Party loss - Lorraine Mary Murphy beat slated Araceli Reyes De La Cruz
C. Sheehan vacancy - Party win for Maura McMahon Zeller
K. Sheehan vacancy - Party win for Jill Rose Quinn
So that's eight out of 12 in contested races.

The Democratic Party's slated candidates split in the races for the Appellate Court, but Justice P. Scott Neville, Jr., the Party's slated candidate, held his seat on the Supreme Court.

So call it 10 out of 15 in contested races -- that's a .667 batting average.

Not a sure thing, by any means, but pretty darn good in any league.

So much for the St. Patrick’s Day Massacre. Kudos to Kelly McCarthy.

Could "Beth" please pick up her yard signs with the same zeal that she exhibited putting them down on the public way? Please and thank you.

The apparent moral of this story is that you Irish gals all need to meet and discuss which race you're going to run in. And don't pile into one. If you do, you only win if you win the ballot lottery or minimize your public exposure because the more they meet you, the less they like you. That's true for most judicial candidates. If you're a black guy, the moral of the story is to have a clearly "black" name (Derico, Brooks, Whiting, Shoop) and avoid one-on-ones and/or middle or lower ballot positions with Irish gals (Whiting, Shoop, Hill and Wilson).

Congrats to TIESHA L. SMITH. YOUR ELECTION IN CHICAGO WAS DECISIVE, BY OVER 40K VOTES. THAT VOTE TOTAL WAS NOT THE RESULT TWO IRISH RUNNING AGAINST EACH OTHER. ONWARD, UPWARD AND FORWARD...!

I Like Tiesha and I voted for her. But let’s not start the revisionist history clouded by an election win. Tiesha won because the Irish vote was split AND because black people, particularly black WOMEN knew or strongly suspected she was black. Voters don’t know ANY of these candidates. Tiesha won. Congratulations. But please don’t kid yourself why. Same holds true for all of the rest of you. It’s all a name game and who else is in a particular contest. This year’s winners just as easily could have been (and in some classes were) last cycle’s losers. Or next cycle’s losers. By the way, Kerrie Maloney Laytin has a bright future. And that Duffy woman and the the rest of the Leprechauns will all be back next cycle.
