It looks worse on the map than the numbers actually indicate

I realize how tough it must be this morning, but I hope that Justice Tom Kilbride will not see this defeat as a personal repudiation. The Third Judicial District of the State of Illinois has been a Republican stronghold for some time. His non-partisan retention race got framed in partisan terms and this result followed.

I am somewhat surprised to see that Justice Kilbride did not reach the 60% threshold in Will County, however.

Well, Kilbride's retention was framed in explicitly partisan terms this time around. Last time around the partisanship was there but just flew beneath the radar. And, of course, Kilbride was originally elected on a partisan ballot.
