Who Sits Where: National Pack Rat Day, Yellow Brick Road Edition

Today, May 17, is Sugar Ray Leonard's 63rd birthday, which is hard to believe. Today is also the 119th anniversary of the publication of The Wizard of Oz. L. Frank Baum wrote that book, a classic of children's literature, and a recognized progenitor of the science fiction genre, while a Chicago resident.

What does that have to do with the Cook County judiciary? Perhaps nothing. But it may give you a conversational topic besides our abysmal Spring weather.

Today is also National Pack Rat Day, a day set aside by very few to consider whether we are holding onto things we would be better off without.

Meanwhile, we are also 10 months away from the 2020 Primary. And so, once again, we pause to look at what judicial vacancies there may be to be filled on the next Feast of St. Patrick.

What follows is not a comprehensive list of Cook County judicial vacancies but, rather, a list of vacancies that have either been filled by Supreme Court appointment, or for which an application process has been announced, or that I believe to exist even though no announcement has been made. Not all of the "vacancies" listed below are necessarily vacant -- and some of the persons identified as filling these vacancies have not yet actually taken office -- but an official announcement has been made. There are probably other vacancies, beyond those reported here, which the Supreme Court has neither filled nor announced. When new vacancies are made public, I can and will update as necessity requires and opportunity permits.

But this is the best information I have now.

As always, all errors of omission or commission in this list are mine alone and I am grateful for additions and corrections provided.

----------------------------------------------------------------
1 Justice Hyman is a Cook County Circuit Court judge sitting by appointment to the Appellate Court. The language of the Supreme Court's order appointing Justice Hyman to this vacancy suggests that, unless he runs for, and wins a seat on the Appellate Court in 2020, he will return to his original position as a Circuit Court judge. For this reason I have not included a "Hyman vacancy" among the countywide openings.

2 The late Rhonda Crawford won the Democratic Party's nomination for this vacancy in the 2016 primary but never took office.

3 Vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Alexander White.

4 Jeanne Marie Wrenn was appointed to this vacancy, but, last November, Judge Wrenn was elected to fill the 8th Subcircuit vacancy of the Hon. Sheryl Pethers. That is why this vacancy is again unfilled.

IT IS A BONA FIDE VIOLATION OF THE GENEVA CONVENTIONS THAT ALDERMAN HOWARD BROOKINS HAS NOT BEEN APPOINTED TO THE BENCH. FOR SHAME.

Almost like clockwork there are 8 countywide vacancies for the party to slate by August. Toni will demand fealty while she shakes you down for $40k and delivers nothing. She lost as did several of her committeemen. And those who did survive did so just barely. Three Irish gals, either current or former residents of the 19th Ward are already ready for Brooks, Derico and Smith. Perhaps they will get a 4th to have fun with Cushing too as he did so well in 2016 with the faux Irish Alex Gillespie (she is as Irish as Arong O’Brien was). 2020 is going to make all prior cycles look like patty-cake given the Supreme and Appellate Court races.

Neville is appointing Jennifer Ballard to the 7th Subcircuit. Announcement forthcoming. She is also the cousin of Walter Burnett and P. Scott wants to be slated so . . .

Howard doesn't want Additional Judgeship A, he wants Additional Judgeship B which is going to be announced in early December. Or so he keeps telling people and trying to convince himself will occur.

He will NOT be appointed to that "surprise" Additional Judgeship B that will be announced just in time for the late filing period in December 2019. Howard won't take an appointment because he doesn't want to lose his aldermanic salary unless or until he knows that his robe is a sure thing. But when he tries (again) to run for the Second Subcircuit Howard will then be knocked off the ballot by an old friend. And no, the person coming for you this time is NOT one of the TWO people who knocked you off the ballot last time. No. This time the person gunning for you will be from within your circle of trust.

There will be no Additional Judgeship B in the Second Subcircuit. If you closely review the subcircuit listings on the Illinois Courts website you will quickly notice that almost all but three (3) subcircuits have reached their full complement of judges with the exception of 1, 7 and 15. You will also notice that the 3rd has one more slot than any other because that is Madigan's subcircuit and he always get more than anyone else. If the Supremes attempt to convert the remaining future vacancies of Sophia Hall, Irwin Solganick and/or Michael Toomin into a Second Subcircuit vacancy, then the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois -- John Lausch -- should start issuing grand jury subpoenas to the AOIC, the Supreme Court and Illinois State Board of Elections. That's a bad look Justices Theis and Neville. We know your other colleague's husband and his cronies don't care about appearances, but after yesterday's inauguration you two better start worrying because Alderman Burke and Speaker Madigan are definitely in trouble and you don't want any part of it. One of you is up for election in less than 12 months and the other has a retention in 2020. And we and your beloved Chicago Tribune and "Injustice Watch" are watching you closely Mary Jane. Why do you think P. Scott is being "honored" by JAPAC later this week. He's trying to hedge his bets with the SJWs of the JAPAC and Brendan Shiller law firm.
