In an order entered yesterday, the Illinois Supreme Court appointed Diana L. Embil to a 15th Subcircuit vacancy created by the retirement of Judge George F. Scully, Jr. (Scully, a former State Representative, was appointed to the bench in 2009 and elected in 2010). Embil's appointment is effective Thursday, October 13; it will terminate on December 2, 2018.
This will be Embil's second tour of duty on the Circuit Court bench. She was first appointed to a 15th Subcircuit vacancy in early 2013, but lost her bid to hold that seat by a very narrow margin in the 2014 Primary.
Licensed in Illinois since 1988, Embil has served as a law clerk to the late Appellate Court Justice R. Eugene Pincham and to Supreme Court Justice Charles Freeman.
Currently, according to her LinkedIn page (from which this photograph is taken), Embil was serving on the Character & Fitness Committee of Board of Bar Admissions of Illinois Supreme Court. She previously served as an Associate Regional Counsel with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and as a member of the Minimum Continuing Legal Education of the Illinois Supreme Court. She has also worked for Jones, Ware & Grenard and as a staff attorney with the Chicago Public Schools.

Charlie Meyerson's Chicago Public Square had this yesterday, but it's not
the first time I've been a day late... or, for that matter, a dollar short.

Good Luck Judge Embil! Don't let the inevitable haters keep you down.
Shea Butter rocks!!! Black Lady Who Reads.
Another former Illinois Supreme Court law clerk gets appointed who was rejected by the voters. Then she is appointed a second time. No public announcement or opportunity to apply for the vacancy. How surprising. Jack, could you please do us all a favor? Replace the candidate websites on the right of the page with a list of the subcircuits that do not have former Supreme Court law clerks as residences? Many of us would find that information useful (career wise) as we are at an age that we are no longer concerned about school districts.
Like I said Judge Embil . . . don't let the hate keep you down. Haters hate. When they go low, you go high.
No hate here. Facts are facts. On a personal level Diana Embil is very nice. As a judge, nothing special. But that is not a knock, as most judges are nothing special. Former law clerk to Supreme Court Justice, appointed once, lost election, appointed again. It is what it is. Just kind of sad and discouraging to those struggling to get their first break and elevate to the bench.
Sad and discouraged? Circulate some petitions and get into the game. Venting on this website won't do anything to end your "struggle." The more the merrier.
An Illinois Supreme Court Law Clerk is a BIG plus in the "Legal Knowledge" category. I'd rather have her deciding cases then some hack who knows somebody and their only experience is going to every political event and fundraiser on the calendar.
Responding to Judge John Roberts (above): Your Honor, my experiences must be a little different than yours. Being an Illinois Supreme Court Law Clerk has nothing to do with "Legal Knowledge". And if being "some hack who knows somebody" and "going to every political event and fundraiser on the calendar" was a disqualifier for judicial service, 99% of those sitting on the bench would not be there. Actually, landing a clerking job with the Illinois Supreme Court takes quite a bit of political juice as well. As commented above by others. Judge Embil may be great, but that misses the point. The point is that this is just another Supreme Court "friends and family" appointment. "Get in the game" would be good advice if the playing field was level.
