Congratulations to 3 of the CCBA's past presidents Mays, Fairman and Bates and CCBA's active and energetic committee chair, Levander Smith. Proud of the CCBA and it's century plus years of leadership.

Shameful that no Latinos have been named on the final list. Diversity obviously isn't a concern. Speaks ill of the judiciary.

ALL CAPS, have you got a scoop for me?

ARITHMETIC MY DEAR JACK. NOW THAT TIERNAN IS AN ASSOCIATE, TIRADO HAS WON THE LACY VACANCY RACE IN THE 14TH

This list, as with past lists, is not about diversity or talent. Sure. A few good ones snuck in. But most of these candidates won because of clout and/or they needed to be taken out of other races to save them. Only in Cook County is Ann irish male an endangered species in need of protection. Guess someone will have to run countywide against his Latina opponent. I’ll be voting for her on March 17.

When under-represented groups must depend on an electorate that is comprise primarily of over-represented groups, the process will yield such results. Can’t depend on the kindness of strangers and best go out and hustle your own votes. I love all you people who never did anything in the community or engage politically who think the electoral process is broken when it didn’t result in your election the first time you run for judge. It’s all a crap shoot. Want a robe. Get some petitions and hustle. Don’t cry when Evans doesn’t make you a second-class associate judge.

I see what you're saying ALL CAPS...

If I were ever on the horns of such a happy dilemma as Judge Tiernan (or Judge Mays or Judge Smith or Judge Bates or Judge Forti) finds himself (themselves) this morning, I imagine I would fold my electoral tent, send my notice of withdrawal to the ISBE, thank my lucky stars (and my clout) for my great good fortune, and pay whatever my pastor might ask to have a Te Deum sung at my parish church. I imagine my wife would divorce me if I didn't do these things.

But... this is politics, not my imagination, and the situation may be complicated, especially for Judges Mays and Smith, who made solemn promises and covenants to run with the Democratic ticket countywide. This year, for whatever reason, I don't have much information about subcircuit slatings -- but Judges Bates, Forti, and Tiernan may or may not have similar issues.

And... what's the harm of letting the campaign go on? I mean, if one of these five judges, and soon-to-be associate judges, loses, he or she would remain an associate judge. (And, if all five stayed on the ballot and ran and won, by rule, a new round of associate judge selection would automatically be triggered -- yikes!)

I was thinking instead, ALL CAPS, that perhaps you had the inside scoop on whether the Supreme Court was going to refill one of these five vacancies, which will again be vacant once the new AJs are sworn in.

Interesting times, to be sure.

Solemn promises and covenants to the Democratic Party? WTF, Jack! At best, they are indifferent and worst, thieves. Do what you want Mays or Smith, but you paid those F'ers to get a robe and now you have one. Get off the crazy train before they keep coming back with their hands held out for more. And Van, enjoy watching Mc and O' having to truly slug it out in a contested one-one race. St. Patrick's Day Massacre indeed. And an aside, thank you Tom Stapka and Mike O'Malley for running your alt-slates. It just might do wonders to increase the representation of black males as elected countywide Circuit Judges.

Was that Jack Leyhane circulating at Union Station on December 3? It sure was!
No. No, it wasn't. That's how easy it is to start false rumors in these subcircuit elections.

Mays and Smith already dropped $40 K to the party.Think they will get that back? Why not, ballots have not been printed yet nor mailers sent out?
Both of them will most likely win in March so Full Circuits that voted for them wasted two votes.
The other Judges running in subcircuit races were not obligated to drop any money but why withdraw ? Do nothing, spend no money and maybe you get lucky and win.
Did this AJ vote need to take place now ? Many don't think so.

Tiernan is a great guy but why would he stay in a race that he will probably lose? Be smart and take your AJ and call it a victory.

For the slated candidates running countywide cut your losses and take the AJ. Who wants to campaign in the winter?

Everyone else still in the race, get your hand warmers, it is going to be a cold winter.

They need to reform the system...get rid of public elections. Anyone with dough and a law license can run for Judge in Illinois which is lunacy. Perfect example is Epstein who is only 4 years out of law school and is running for the highest court in Illinois because he has the money. Anyone who goes through the Associate Judge process will not make the short list if they have a single negative review from the multiple bar organizations that do the evaluations. Take note of the history of candidates running in public elections who have negative bar ratings. Any notion that associate judges are second class to circuit judges is ridiculous.

Lots of biased opinions offering help and suggestions. I say all of you should stay in, don't remove yourselves from the ballot, and let the chips fall where they may. If you lose, the election, you still have your day job. Your judicial electorate doesn't care what you do as long as you cover for them when they leave everyday at 2:00 to sunbathe in their backyard.

anonymous 12/6 at 1:24, surely you are joking. You think the associate process is superior? Like anything else in life, it's all about who you know. The associate process is not superior to elections or is elections superior to appointment. They are both flawed.
