Illinois Supreme Court Justice Mary Jane Theis has announced application processes to fill vacancies in the 3rd and 10th Subcircuits.
Full details about the application process for the 10th Subcircuit vacancy can be found here; information about the forthcoming 3rd Subcircuit vacancy can be found here.
The deadline to apply for either vacancy is July 25 at 4:00 p.m. -- and, no, interested persons can't apply for both: Persons wishing to be considered must be a resident of the subcircuit from which they seek appointment.
Candidates seeking appointment by Justice Theis will have to participate in screening by the Alliance of Bar Associations, which is made up of 11 bar groups in the Cook County area, and the Chicago Bar Association. Further review will be conducted by a special judicial screening committee that Justice Theis established in 2013 and is co-chaired by retired U.S. District Court Judge Wayne R. Andersen and retired Illinois Appellate Court Judge Michael J. Gallagher. Persons who have submitted applications to Justice Theis's committee before will have to submit a new application.
The 10th Subcircuit vacancy is created by the elevation of Judge Eileen O'Neill Burke to the Appellate Court; Burke ran unopposed for the Epstein vacancy in the March primary and was appointed to fill that vacancy soon thereafter. She was first elected to the Circuit Court in 2008.
The 3rd Subcircuit vacancy will occur on July 31 when Judge Maureen Leahy Delehanty retires. Judge Delehanty began her judicial career in 2009, when she was appointed to a countywide vacancy. She was subsequently appointed to a 3rd Subcircuit vacancy in 2010, winning election to that vacancy in 2012.

Charlie Meyerson's Chicago Public Square had this yesterday, but it's not
the first time I've been a day late... or, for that matter, a dollar short.

Place your bets, place your bets.
Vegas odds-makers showing the favorites in this order: SS, IH, TC, CD and KO.
Oh, goody! Fire up the clown car and pack in the blue ribbon judicial selection committee. The Theis Circus is coming to town again for two more performances. Uncle Jack, will you please take me to both shows?
Good guesses, but the long delay in posting this vacancy suggests a Trojan Horse; someone who had to find a home and move into 10 before the supremes could announce the pre-filled vacancy.
Insiders say that the choice for the 3rd is already made.
Trojan Horse speculation is a wise bet, especially since a recent unsuccessful candidate is looking for a new home, but alas the tea leaves are pointing to one of the odds-on favorites referenced in the first comment. Why else would one fortuitously renew their domain name so far in advance of 2018 unless one was told of their impending coronation? Sloppy mistake or coincidence?
I heard the 10 vacancy is going to IH. Always the bridesmaid, finally the bride.
Word is Anita is working hard to make RC a made-man before the Foxx takes over the hen house. Her pick would immediately be shot down countywide given her toxicity, so 10 is the only place RC can go. Anita's top people need new gigs fast.
Meanwhile, KO is not sitting out 2018 regardless of who gets appointed.
This blog is so much fun to read. But black lady who reads is sitting here shaking her naturally curly hair after reading about the shenanigans surrounding how some people get picked like apples (or is it cherries) by the good Justice even when she advertises for applications. Maybe we, the voters need a 'judicial revolution'. Now that would be "yuuuuuge".
So Judge Robin Shoffner is found Not Recommended by the CBA ("Lawyers who have appeared
before Judge Shoffner expressed concerns about the judge’s knowledge of the law, work ethic,
fairness, and judicial temperament and demeanor"), is rejected by the voters in the March primary, and yet the Supreme Court reappoints her to another subcircuit vacancy where she apparently does not even live.
Who are IH and TC?
From what I read when doing my research, every other bar gave the judge Schoffner pretty good marks. It's a good thing that the CBA is not the Gospel instead it reads more like the gospel according to malarkey. Your friend, black lady who reads. Love this blog.
Whoever picked SS back on June 21st is the winner. He/she knew the appointee before the applications were due. All this charade of committees and finding the best candidate is total BS. EP, if you wan to call SS the friends and family plan, by all means don't feel the need to hold back.
Insiders talking about the 3rd would be dead wrong. It's been several months since the deadline to submit for the 3rd and 10th has come and gone. Since then, Judge Stephanie has been on the bench for nearly 2 months and still no word about the 3rd. Now the Supremes have awarded another another well-qualified (translation: Irish) lad of the Southwest suburbs a plum appointment to the 4th Sub, replacing Judge Riley. Justice Theis must be having trouble choosing from all of the well-qualified (same translation) applicants to make certain to choose the one would most likely (and successfully) challenge her former law clerk in a countywide race so that the competition is eliminated.
