A campaign website has now been launched in support of Judie Lyn Smith's 5th Subcircuit candidacy (Shelley vacancy). That's a link to the campaign website in the preceding sentence; a link has been added to the site Sidebar as well.
Licensed as an attorney in Illinois since 1992, according to ARDC, Smith currently serves as a an Assistant Public Defender, based in Markham.
Smith's campaign bio notes that she has been in the Public Defender's Office for the past 18 years "serving the voiceless, underserved, and indigent accused, no matter what." According to her campaign bio, Smith also worked as a clerk to "two appellate-level judges" and as a sole practitioner. The campaign bio also notes that Smith is conversant in French and Japanese, having "lived in Japan as an American lawyer and English teacher" and having pursued "undergraduate studies at the Sorbonne."
Smith is also an "urban farmer," according to her campaign bio, farming "at two community garden plots located within the fifth judicial sub-circuit" and donating "her farming skills, time, organic seeds, and the resulting, bountiful harvests to community organizations."
This is Smith's first bid for election to the bench, although she has previously applied for associate judge.
