Groebner holding lead in 13th Subcircuit race -- but votes are still being counted

Yesterday at noon-time, Susanne Michele Groebner was reported to be clinging to a miniscule 99-vote lead over Gary William Seyring. All 225 precincts in the 13th Subcircuit had reported in.

But, just as on the national stage, the counting of mail-in ballots continues in suburban Cook County. A "significant number of VBM ballots" were still pending last evening, according to sources in the offices of Cook County Clerk Karen Yarbrough. And, in the most recent update provided by the Clerk's office, Groebner's lead has grown significantly, to 3,732 votes.

This will change. Groebner's lead may go up or down as mail-in ballots are processed. Mail-in ballots postmarked by Election Day may still be coming in.

I am tempted, by experience, to believe that this race, once seemingly so close, is not a cliff-hanger after all. But this is the Year of Never Ending Pandemic and things generally do not play out as expected or predicted. So we continue to wait. And watch. Here... and elsehwere.

  1. Don’t look now, but Fallon is closing fast on DiFranco in the 12th. What was once an eight-point DiFranco lead is now within a point, around 1,500 votes, with thousands more coming in and to be counted. Keep your eyes peeled on the Cook County suburban website.
