Politico's Illinois Playbook is regularly linked in the blog Sidebar.
An excerpt from this morning's post:
In his election announcement sent to POLITICO, Reyes, the first Latino elected to the Appellate Court in Illinois, said, “As a descendant of immigrants and a product of a blue-collar family, I know of the struggles many people in the state of Illinois have to endure on a daily basis.”The Illinois Playbook post includes the suggestion that six other jurists, including Justice P. Scott Neville, Jr., who was appointed to the Freeman vacancy last year, and Justice Sheldon A. Harris, whose election announcement ran yesterday here on FWIW, are exploring possible campaigns for this position.
Personal opinion, clearly labeled as such: I think there may be as many as 10 or 12 candidates who will seriously consider bids for the Freeman vacancy. I do not necessarily expect that all 10 or 12 will make it to the ballot in the March 2020 primary -- but Supreme Court vacancies are rare (justices are elected to 10-year terms and face only a retention election thereafter, not a contested election, in order to remain in office) and this scarcity almost necessitates a 'now-or-never' analysis.
This election occurs over Cook County? Or State of Illinois?
ReplyDeleteWhat is Sandy Ramos going to do now that Jessie announced ? Try for Chief Judge again ?
ReplyDeleteA little birdy whispered that Ramos and the Latino judges cut a deal with Evans for Ramos to go to law division, where she is blatantly unqualified, in exchange for not running against Evans. Time will tell...
DeleteWait for a certain Irish female with 3 names to hop in too.
DeleteMR NYBERG THE ELECTION IS ONLY IN COOK COUNTY. ILLINOIS IS DIVIDED IN 5 SUPREME COURT DISTRICTS. COOK COUNTY IS ONE OF THEM AND ELECTS 3 SUPREME COURT JUSTICES. THE REST OF THE STATE IS DIVIDED INTO 4 DISTRICTS WHICH EACH ELECT ONE JUSTICE.
ReplyDeleteFACT OF THE DAY - THE REASON THESE ANNOUNCEMENTS ARE BEING MADE THIS WEEK IS BECAUSE THE JUDICIAL CODE STATES THAT CANDIDATES CAN NOT ANNOUNCE THEY ARE RUNNING EARLIER THAN ONE YEAR BEFORE THE ELECTION. SINCE THE PRIMARY IS MARCH 17, 2020, YOU ARE GETTING ANNOUNCEMENTS NOW
ReplyDeleteJACK I DON'T KNOW IF YOU ANNOUNCED IT BUT THE NEW CHAIRMAN OF JUDICIAL SLATING (SINCE ED BURKE HAS BEEN DEPOSED) IS SENATOR DON HARMON, THE OAK PARK COMMITTEEMAN

South Side Irish Gal says that she is going to run against one of the "black guys"; likely Smith or Brooks. So many lining up to challenge "Derico" that it might actually help him out. The Irish are almost as disorganized as the blacks. Look at that mess of a mayoral fight between Jerry Joyce and Bill Daley. The Sheahan family better restore order or their daughter-in-law might have trouble with her retention. If they can knock out "Coghlan," then they can knock out a Sheahan -- especially one who never had to really campaign in 2014.

South Side Irish Gal
Cobbs announced yesterday in Olympia Fields
ReplyDeleteAre you ok, Jack?
ReplyDeleteNorthwest side State Senator(JM) to get judicial appointment in the 10th. Done deal. How many judges has Sen JC gotten appointed now? He must have her direct dial number.
ReplyDeleteLori Lightfoot and Donald Trump are my candidate role models. Nobody thought that they could win until they won. There will easily be 15-20 people who jump into the race for Supreme Court because NOBODY knows who any of these people are and the party ain't worth squat. Burke is going to federal prison and Preckwinkle has no juice. Harmon and Zuccarrelli are jokes.

When you have 8, you might as well have 28. The Irish will split the Southwest side and southwest suburbs. The Blacks will split the southside and south suburbs. Harris will do well in the lakefront and northern burbs (and in the southside because "Harris" is one of the more common "black" last names out there, right after Jackson and Washington). This is going to be a real free-for-all. Also keep in mind that several of us plan to file just to get your names out there for 2022 for the Burke vacancy. Yep, Annie is stepping down in 2021 and will be appointing, you guessed it, an Irish gal to replace her.
Come on everybody, join the party! I plan to.
