Beatriz A. Frausto-Sandoval winning in the 14th Subcircuit

The 14th Subcircuit does not typically have judicial contests. This year it did.

Apparently, Chuy Garcia has coattails.

Beatriz A. Frausto-Sandoval is leading Judge Marina E. Ammendola 11,031 to 8,179 with 91.22% of the City votes counted. Frausto-Sandoval also leads in the suburban portion of the 14th, with 2,611 votes to Ammendola’s 1,983 (34 of 37 suburban precincts reporting).

  1. This one is astounding. Hispanic names have done unusually well in judicial contests today...but for the party-backed candidate to lose in the 14th, wow. No one has even challenged the slated candidate in the 14th since 1992. Have to wonder if they took it for granted; Ammendola didn't even have a campaign website up until ten days or so ago (at least not one that showed up on Google.) The state elections website doesn't report any significant campaign activity either.

  2. The subcircuits were created as a response to criticisms that countywide elections resulted in an insufficient number of minorities and Republicans on the bench. In 1992,the Illinois legislature enacted legislation establishing the subcircuit system in Cook County, with the aim of increasing diversity on the bench. The 14th subcircuit is a predominately Mexican subcircuit. Yet, there has never been a Latino judge elected from that subcircuit until yesterday. The Irish led by Burke had a stronghold on that subcircuit. I'm glad to see that Latinos led by Chuy are finally pushing back and winning. Congratulations Judge Elect Frausto-Sandoval. You will be a welcome addition to a profession that is still not reflective of the population it serves.

  3. MY PREDICTION - A WHITE WILL NEVER AGAIN WIN IN THE 14TH. THANK YOU CHUY FOR STICKING YOUR NECK OUT AND MAKING SURE THAT THE 14TH SUBCIRCUIT DOES WHAT IT IS SUPPOSED TO DO - ELECT LATINOS NOT BURKE & MADIGAN BUDDIES.

  4. Hello all,

Awhile back I wrote that the Mexicans were going to run a candidate in the 14th and that he/she would win.

Well, they did it and good for them. And I agree with "all caps" that the days of the 14th ward getting their way in that sub-circuit came to a screeching halt this past Tuesday. And I am thrilled that it did.

    As always, E. P.

    1. EP is back! I would welcome your comments on other races throughout the county as you clearly have your finger on the pulse of the judiciary. Any insights for Associate Judge? Selfishly I am a first time applicant and would find your thoughts helpful.

  5. Don't be fooled, no one "ran" Frausto-Sandoval, people would like you to think so that they can make $$$ off of future judicial hopefuls & promise them the same results, she had NO political connections, she was brave & put herself out there & was the People's choice, she owes NOTHING to NO ONE, except to the public which she will serve.

  6. Dear Anon @ 03-22-18 @ 5:41,

Dude, you are clueless. Frausto-Sandoval was a part of a ticket.

Chuy Garcia ran a ticket that included judicial candidate, Frausto -Sandoval on it. Along with his candidate for Cook County Board, Anaya and a candidate for state rep., Ortiz.

Their names and faces were together EVERYWHERE, they made public appearances together EVERYWHERE, were photographed together EVERYWHERE and were on the same sample ballot and palm card EVERYWERE.

I'm not taking anything away from Frausto-Sandoval but to suggest that she did it all by herself is just plain uninformed and naïve.

    As always, E.P.

  8. What about Judge Ed Arce? Wasn't he elected in the 14th subcircuit?

  9. Hello Anon @ 03-29-18 @ 12:31,

Arce was a Burke guy and ran unopposed.
    So that election doesn't count.
