Supporters of Judge Cecilia Anne Horan's bid to maintain her countywide seat are planning a "neighborhood fundraiser" for their candidate on Tuesday, November 14, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., at the Dovetail Brewery, 1800 W. Belle Plaine, Chicago.
The "suggested contribution" for this event is $25, but sponsorships are available ($125 - Friend, $250 - Supporter, $500 - Patron, $1,000 - Chair). The event promoters advise that Dovetail is "kid- and dog-friendly," and that there will be free pizza and a cash bar. Hon. Patrick O’Connor, Hon. Lucy Moog, Hon. Mike Volini, Hon. Mary Ann Smith, Hon. James Cappleman, Hon. Carol Ronen, Hon. Marion Volini, Hon. Raymond Lopez, Hon. Paul Rosenfeld, and Hon. Brendan Reilly are the listed hosts for this fundraiser.
For more information about this event, or to reserve tickets, email Eric Nelson at eric@blueprintcampaignconsulting.com or call him at (773) 562-9559.
I think she needs more political support.
ReplyDeleteYes, she does. More than she might realize. Quish too.
ReplyDeleteJack, maybe you could speak to this point - I thought that the title of "Honorable" was used almost exclusively for judges or magistrates and stays with a judge or magistrate into retirement. Even non-active judges who have served by temporary Supreme Court appointment and have never been elected keep the title for life. It is one of the cool perks of being a judge. When judicial candidates have fundraisers, some, as in this case, grace Chicago alderman, state representatives, and even democratic committeemen with the title of Honorable. I have even seen the title attached to the Cook County recorder of deeds. It does not seem proper. Is this taking ego stroking and derriere smooching too far? (By the way, since I WILL NEVER EVER become an actual judge I have bestowed the title upon myself for use on FWIW instanter)

ReplyDelete@ "Hon. Anonymous" - 11/1 @ 3:18 p.m. - I have scoured the Internet in search of an answer to your question... the relevant portion of the Wikipedia entry provides that, in the United States, "There is also no universal rule for whether city officials other than the mayor (such as city council, board of aldermen, board of selectmen, planning and zoning commission members, and code enforcement board members, or city manager or police chief or fire chief) are given the title [Hon.]; local practices vary."
ReplyDeleteAnother site, Honor & Respect, which is promoting a book of the same name written by one Robert Hickey (and subtitled "the Official Guide to Names, Titles, & Forms of Address") casts shade on the abbreviation "Hon." -- the correct form, according to Mr. Hickey, is "The Honorable (Full Name). Mr. Hickey says merely using "Hon." is wrong (so is using "Honorable" without the "The").
And here's the really bad news, "Hon. Anonymous": According to Mr. Hickey, "One never uses the The Honorable when saying or writing one's own name." But I suppose as long as no one tells Mr. Hickey, it's OK if you want to use that title here....
