Several former judges are on this list as well. Some of these were slated when they ran; some weren't. However, as I'd suggested in a Page Two post back in 2015, slating buys only credibility and access. The $40,000 buy-in (or whatever it may be for 2018) is like an NFL seat license: It just buys the candidate the right to buy tickets, in this case tickets to everybody else's fundraisers. And ads in everyone's adbooks.
And then, of course, there's SLATING... and then there's slating. And the electorate can be fickle, even when the committeemen are faithful. So, for many reasons, some judges wind up ex-judges, hoping to return via the associate judge selection process. Some just lost their spots; some have been gone for awhile.
FWIW readers will recognize a number of applicants on this list as candidates in previous election cycles. Many of these have applied for associate judge before as well. Some names will be particularly familiar because they'd previously made it to the Almost-Promised Land of the Fabled Short List. Almost-promised. These former finalists stand once again outside the wardrobe door, hoping it will fully open into Narnia this time but, if history is any guide, many will find only old coats.
Anyway, without further preface, here is the list of applicants.

As far as slating, supreme court appointments, and making the associate judge short list; I see things the way they really are. By that, I mean all three are similar in that they are not transparent or fair, and they are controlled by extremely hypocritical people. Some more than others.
ReplyDeleteI believe Mr. Leyhane sees things differently. He sees the glass as half-full. He is an optimist and looks for signs that slating, supreme court appointments, and the short list are conducted in a way that we all wish they were: Transparent, honest and fair. Where everyone has an equal shot.
Reviewing the 2017 associate candidate list, familiar names are seen. Surprising, several judges who went home early due to losing their elections are NOT on the list. I guess they are done. Even more surprising, I see that at least one judge, twice appointed and needing to run again, NOT on the list. I guess that is confidence or arrogance or both.
And, for the first time in many, many years, I see that Mr. Leyhane, along with my own name is not on the list. A rare time that Mr. Leyhane and I have reached the same conclusion. Bravo to you Mr. Leyhane. No need to put yourself through the process again. Hope is the last to die. But hope is also a fog, and once it lifts, the world is seen with new clarity.
Dear Anon 3/6/17 @ 7:02,
ReplyDeleteThat's right -- life's not fair. But glad to hear that you are quitting. Less competition for the rest of us too dumb or stubborn to quit.
By the way, the Easter Bunny was shot by the same guy who murdered Bambi's mother. Santa Claus died from a heart attack. I could list other things "unfair" in life, but you surely get the idea.
Get over it and yourself. Numerous elected judges were not slated, appointed or even bothered to apply for the short list and yet there they are, wreaking havoc, er, dispensing justice on the Fourth Floor in Traffic Court (when they bother to come to work) or in some other crevice of the county that they call their kingdom. Several former judges were both slated and appointed (some more than once -- in BOTH categories) and the operative word in this sentence is FORMER.
I hope you are able to convince 270 other people to join the quitter's circle too because that AJ list could use some preemptive culling. Remember gunners, there can be only one. And in 2018, numerous readers of this blog plan to be that person in their particular judicial race.
But watch out for those Second Time Runners, several of 2014's and 2016's winners were losers in prior cycles and repeat runners don't make the same rookie mistakes that the rest of the herd tend to make. Ok, one person this cycle seems hell bent on using the same play book from 2016. Perhaps he is confident, arrogant or both. Or perhaps he's crazy like a fox because even a broken clock is right twice a day. But only time will tell.
Sincerely,
ARROYO EP CAROTHERS McCULLOCH, Inc. (we like da nobody's nobody sent, but we want their money even more)
Wait a minute... Santa Claus is d-d-d-d- -- not feeling well?

I don't believe you!
