Judge Eileen O'Neill Burke to get headstart on her Appellate Court career

In an order entered today, the Illinois Supreme Court appointed Circuit Court Judge Eileen O'Neill Burke to the Epstein vacancy on the Illinois Appellate Court. The appointment is effective March 31 and will terminate on December 5, 2016 -- the day that Judge Burke will be sworn in as the winner of the election to the Epstein vacancy.

Judge Burke won the Democratic Party's nomination for this vacancy yesterday (she was unopposed). Since no Republican filed for the vacancy, she will unopposed in the November general election as well.

Judge Stuart Palmer had been serving in this vacancy pursuant to a prior Supreme Court appointment. Judge Palmer recently retired; the vacancy created by that retirement was among those also on the ballot yesterday.

  1. Wanna take bets which previously endorsed candidate in the 10th who dropped out for Reilly will be appointed to the Burke vacancy.

  2. It is a good thing Judge Evans hit the brakes and delayed the release of the Associate Judge Short List. It is also a good thing that someone invented the eraser. (Yes, Virginia, the Short List is scribed in pencil until after the Democratic Primary). Have no worries for Judges Bates, Schoop, Martin, Shoffner, Ahmad, and Simpkins. Hmmm. Maybe that would be too obvious. Maybe three of them on the Short List and three of them reappointed by the Supreme Court. That sounds good. In any event, voters really do not know what they are doing, so a soft landing awaits all these judges.

  3. I find it so funny that today is Toni Preckwinkle's birthday. How ironic she was hatched on St. Patrick's Day. I guess the luck of the Irish was not with her "2016 Soul Slate" of five judges. (Kim Foxx does not count !!!)

  4. It's interesting that all three alternates who got slated once the late vacancies opened up lost. Yet Judge Schoop was the only ab initio slated candidate to lose. Any ideas why that is?

  5. Don't see how Shoffner makes Associate short list or re-upped by Supreme Court after getting dinged by CBA.
