108 -- Furmin D. Sessoms

Candidate website

The Chicago Bar Association says:
Furmin D. Sessoms is “Qualified” for the office of Circuit Court Judge. Mr. Sessoms was admitted to practice law in Illinois in 1990 and has had diverse experience, including service as Executive Director of the Chicago Southside Branch of the NAACP. Mr. Sessoms currently serves as Deputy Public Defender in the Cook County Public Defender’s office and is an experienced practitioner. Mr. Sessoms is well regarded for his integrity and outstanding temperament. He possesses all the requisite qualifications to serve as a Circuit Court Judge.
The Chicago Council of Lawyers says:
Not Qualified (evaluated for a 2006 judicial vacancy. He has been appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court to fill a judicial vacancy.)

Furmin Sessoms was admitted to practice law in Illinois in 1990. He has spent most of his legal career in the Cook County Public Defender’s Office, but also served as the Executive Director of the Southside Branch of the NAACP between 1994 and 1998 and again between 2000 and 2002. Mr. Sessoms has no jury trial or appellate law experience and despite his many years in the public defender’s office, has only tried misdemeanor cases. His evaluation yielded mixed results as to his temperament and freedom from political influence. While he is to be praised for his community service and commitment to diversity, he has not demonstrated the legal ability or temperament necessary to be a judge. Additionally, the Council has serious concerns about his lack of litigation experience in complex matters. The Council finds him Not Qualified.
