Who Sits Where -- 2018-Is-Here-and-We've-Barely-Begun-2017 Edition

Updated January 27, 2017
Updated January 24, 2017

What follows is not a comprehensive list of Cook County judicial vacancies but, rather, a list of vacancies that have either been filled by Supreme Court appointment or for which an application process has been announced or that I am pretty sure exist even though no announcement has been made. There are, I realize, other vacancies which the Supreme Court has neither filled nor announced; a number of these have been suggested in comments to posts on this blog.

And there will be additional vacancies, and additional appointments between now and late fall when the Illinois State Board of Elections posts an authoritative list of judicial vacancies in anticipation of the 2018 primary. Thus, this list will be updated from time to time.

But I have to start somewhere.

As always, all errors of omission or commission in this list are mine alone and I am grateful for additions and corrections provided.

I had heard about Judge Laws, but didn't have confirmation. Now I do: From a press release issued yesterday, Chief Judge Timothy C. Evans has appointed Judge Tommy Brewer as Acting Presiding Judge in Markham, succeeding "former Presiding Judge Marjorie C. Laws who retired on Friday, January 20, 2017."

Did you hear that Hartigan retired so that he could spend all his time as President of the ISBA ?

Anon 1/24 @10:50 a.m. -- No, I didn't hear that, but I have heard similar stories about other recent ISBA Presidents -- that it was necessary to, in effect, take the whole year off from their day jobs in order to fulfill the duties and obligations of the ISBA presidency. Past presidents who owned all, or most of, their own firms could do this without giving up their practice entirely. A sitting judge might, understandably, encounter some difficulties on this.

I did see that Judge Hartigan has signed up with one of the larger mediation shops (I think it was Resolute Systems) and this would make sense: He can do his ISBA stuff and, meanwhile, start building up a mediation practice that he can ramp up when his ISBA tour of duty is through (he takes the reins of the ISBA in June so he has some get-established time now).
