According to her campaign website, Ortiz is a founding member and past president of the Women's Criminal Defense Bar Association and has served as chair and vice-chair of the Chicago Bar Association's Criminal Law Committee. Born in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood, according to her campaign biography, Ortiz graduated from Chicago's Whitney M. Young High School. She has volunteered for the Chicago Public Schools/Chicago Police Department "We Care" Role models program and performed pro-bono workshops and represented clients on behalf of the Mexican Consulate of Chicago, according to her website.
